The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) was enacted in 1986, yet compliance with this law continues to pose challenges for healthcare professionals and institutions today. This course examines recent trends identified in EMTALA complaint investigations, including multiple examples of failure to stabilize and transfer patients appropriately, particularly when a certain service is not available at the original hospital. The course also offers practice recommendations for healthcare professionals who provide care to patients who present with emergency medical conditions.
