Risk and Safety Issues in Pathology XVI advances patient safety by providing education specifically designed to meet the learning needs of pathologists. Within the parameters of patient safety, effective communication plays a significant role in all aspects of care. However, researchers have found that a typical pathology environment is highly susceptible to error, much of it attributable to ineffective communication. This can lead to misdiagnosis, the inappropriate and costly ordering of unnecessary and painful procedures, the prescribing of contraindicated medications, and even patient death. This course focuses on engaging pathologists in improving patient safety and mitigating risk factors by using effective and evidence-based communication strategies.
