Risk and Safety Issues in Neurology XVI presents strategies for reducing bias in communication and documentation. These include engaging in shared decision making, documenting more mindfully when obtaining consent for treatment, and avoiding stereotypes and stigma that can contribute to misdiagnosis. Research has shown that, like any group of people, healthcare professionals may hold negative explicit and implicit (subconscious) biases against marginalized groups of people. These biases may adversely affect the quality of current or future patient care. This course promotes awareness of situations that may result in bias and contribute to health disparities, inadequate informed consent for novel treatments, delays in diagnosis, and misdiagnosis.
