Risk and Safety Issues in Family Medicine XVI explores effective patient safety strategies related to: (1) prescribing off-label medications, (2) engaging in shared decision making, and (3) managing medications when providing coverage for, or comanaging patients with, another clinician. These aspects of family medicine are fraught with risks when healthcare professionals do not communicate effectively with patients—or with other colleagues involved in the patients’ care. This course offers guidance for discussing the appropriateness of using off-label medication with patients and families, ensuring that care decisions align with patients’ goals, and safely managing medication administration and reconciliation, discharge planning/education, and prescription refills.
