Patient-centered care (PCC) has been identified by the National Academy of Medicine as a critical component of high-quality healthcare, with communication playing a key role in the delivery of PCC. Research suggests that healthcare professionals (HCPs) need to improve their knowledge of PCC. Historically, formal education for HCPs has not heavily focused on nontechnical skills such as communication, but studies show that HCPs can be taught to communicate more effectively, with improvement noted in patient outcomes and patients’ ratings of the quality of the communication with their clinicians.
