Health Equity: Pain Management explores race-related healthcare disparities and strategies to expose implicit bias, such as auditing the language used within notes or the time spent with patients. The case studies in this activity highlight situations in which patients present intoxicated, in denial, or demonstrating potentially violent behaviors, offering related risk lessons for the interdisciplinary healthcare team. A review of communication strategies and terminology to promote patient engagement for those experiencing pain and/or substance use disorder is also provided.
