Prescribing and medication management errors persist in inpatient and outpatient settings, despite the country’s widespread adoption of electronic prescribing and EHRs. While e-prescribing technology has eliminated some problems, it has introduced many others. Moreover, due to constantly changing federal and state laws and regulations, many providers are unaware of the latest requirements meant to keep patients safe from e-prescribing errors. This education will highlight the benefits and risks of e-prescribing; emphasize the importance of carefully checking all fields of each e-prescription or medication order; highlight special considerations for controlled substances; and provide effective medico-legal risk mitigation strategies.
