Is there a way to prevent HCM, or is it strictly genetic? Can an unhealthy lifestyle create HCM?
In general, we say it is always genetic. Unhealthy lifestyle will not cause this, but it does make the symptoms worse if you have HCM. A healthier lifestyle and more exercise will help improve symptoms.

If you don't know your family health history, how do you assess the risk or know what to watch for?
Ask your doctor about any findings on your exam or ECG that suggest your heart is thick. That is a great place to start.
