BALTIMORE, MD—April 2, 2013—In a collaborative effort to provide comprehensive clinical education to healthcare professionals, the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), The University of Utah School of Medicine, and Med-IQ have launched the complimentary performance improvement (PI) CME initiative, Performance Improvement Strategies in Back Pain.

This three-stage initiative offers primary care physicians and members of their clinical team who care for patients with back pain the opportunity to assess their practice methods against nationally recognized quality measures and their peers’ practice in an effort to identify areas of improvement to enhance patient care.

Approximately two-thirds of people in the United States report back pain at some point in their lives, and general internists and family practitioners are often the healthcare professionals who perform the initial evaluation and manage the overall treatment. Participants of this complimentary, 20-credit activity will review current evidence and expert consensus on topics such as physical/neurologic examinations, diagnostic testing options, and risk-benefit analyses of available treatments, as well as practical tips to ensure safe use of pharmacologic agents.

“Back pain is a major source of disability and a common reason for seeking medical care. We are pleased to partner with Med-IQ and collaborate with NCQA to offer a complimentary PI initiative for clinicians that reviews best practices for evaluating back pain, discusses management options and their associated benefits and risks, and provides effective strategies to educate patients about therapeutic interventions that can improve their quality of life and help them return to normal activities as quickly as possible,” said Jack L. Dolcourt, M.D., M.Ed., Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education, University of Utah School of Medicine.
