Overview: In this accredited CME webcast, Kim Huffman, MD, PhD, discusses abstracts presented by her research groups at the 2017 American College of Rheumatology annual meeting in San Diego, California. Topics include the relationship between skeletal muscle cytokines and myostatins before and after physical activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis; the relationship between rheumatoid arthritis and galectin-3 before and after an exercise training program; and the development of an in vitro, 3-dimensional disease model of rheumatoid arthritis.

This activity is intended for rheumatologists.

Statement of Need
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by local inflammatory processes within the skeletal muscle that can lead to physical inactivity, disease activity, and disability. Inflammation—an important part of the muscle repair process—may be dysregulated in patients with RA. Thus, it is critical for clinicians to understand how skeletal muscle alterations occur in order to select appropriate treatment strategies to improve overall health in patients with RA.
