Inspiring Medical Education.

BALTIMORE, MD—November 21, 2013—Med-IQ, an award-winning, ACCME-accredited provider of continuing medical education (CME), is pleased to announce the availability of recent HCV research findings, jointly presented with the Duke University School of Medicine.

Evaluating the Challenges and Impact of Birth Cohort Screening for Hepatitis C in the Primary Care Clinic: A Report of Current Evidence, Practice Patterns, and Opportunities for Improvements in Care is a free, CME/CE-certified online publication designed for clinicians who care for baby boomers.

The disease burden of HCV is increasing, driven partly by high prevalence among baby boomers (those born between 1945 and 1965), who account for more than 75% of HCV cases in the United States (US). Most HCV-infected individuals in this cohort, and in the US in general, are not aware that they are infected. Therefore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommend birth cohort–based screening for HCV. However, many barriers still exist, including poor understanding by both clinicians and the lay public of the disease and its risk factors.

"In this publication, my colleagues and I discuss some early findings from our HCV screening project," said Andrew Muir, MD, activity medical director. "Here we have integrated some of our baseline findings with current medical literature, best practices for improving the identification of HCV within the primary care clinic, and key components of the critical steps involved in the initial counseling and linkage to specialty care for individuals who are HCV positive. We are witnessing astounding advances in our ability to monitor patients with liver disease and cure HCV. Changing the course of HCV care requires focused and coordinated efforts such as these.”

Developed by an expert steering committee of hepatology, primary care, and infectious disease experts, this research initiative is being conducted to better understand how primary care professionals currently approach screening for HCV, implement and test an improvement program, and provide a rationale and framework for the initiation of similar improvement efforts in other settings. Duke University and Med-IQ are proud to offer this CME/CE-certified activity to highlight some key learnings from this initiative and support clinicians trying to understand and integrate recent screening recommendations into already-busy clinics.
