BALTIMORE, MD—November 1, 2013—Although multiple chronic conditions affect a large number of patients, few continuing medical educational (CME) opportunities exist for healthcare professionals on strategies for managing these complex, challenging cases.

In fall 2011, Med-IQ, an award-winning, ACCME-accredited provider of CME, partnered with Duke University School of Medicine to develop a series of interactive CME workshops for primary care clinicians that explored the management of patients with multiple comorbidities. The outcomes of this initiative were published in the September 2013 issue of The International Journal of Clinical Practice.

Complex Cases in Primary Care: Report of a CME-Certified Series Addressing Patients With Multiple Comorbidities

Nearly 500 healthcare professionals attended one of five workshops held in cities across the United States. Through the presentation of clinical evidence and patient case vignettes, the live educational intervention provided primary healthcare professionals with the opportunity to discuss and review evidence-based strategies for addressing a variety of complicated case scenarios in a unique setting in which they could interact closely with faculty experts and peers, receive immediate feedback, and apply newly acquired knowledge to case scenarios.

Results of the educational intervention suggest that highly interactive learning activities can improve participant knowledge and competency in treating patients with multiple comorbidities through the application of evidence-based care.
