BALTIMORE, MD—August 20, 2013—Med-IQ, an award-winning, ACCME-accredited provider of continuing medical education (CME), is pleased to announce the availability of a complimentary, certified CME publication to help clinicians in the federal healthcare system manage the care of patients with depression.

Depression is the second most common illness across all VA healthcare settings. This CME publication, Diagnosing and Managing Depression: Evidence-Based Care Strategies for the Federal Healthcare Professional, is designed to provide clinicians with strategies for recognizing, diagnosing, and managing depression, particularly in veterans returning home from combat.

“Studies indicate that a high percentage of veterans who seek help from the VA for treatment of depressive disorders often struggle to access the appropriate support,” said William A. Mencia, MD, CCMEP, Vice President of Education & Medical Affairs at Med-IQ. "Depression is considered a combat-related injury because it can be directly associated with conditions unique to war; however, patient-related barriers such as concerns about perceived 'weakness,' confidentiality, and career advancement can add to veterans' challenges in seeking out and accessing mental health treatment."

Participants will explore strategies for identifying common patient-related barriers to the recognition and effective management of depression and designing effective treatment plans for patients using VA resources.
