BALTIMORE, MD—May 21, 2013—Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) represent a heterogeneous group of bone marrow disorders that primarily affect the elderly. Because the disease course of MDS varies widely from patient to patient and treatment options are based on the severity of disease, accurate classification is essential for subgroup identification, prognostic assessment, and appropriate treatment.

Med-IQ, an award-winning, ACCME-accredited provider of continuing medical education (CME), sponsored a performance improvement (PI) CME initiative for improving the care of patients with MDS. The clinical journal Leukemia Research has published the outcomes of this initiative in its April 2013 issue.

Improving the diagnosis and treatment of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes through a performance improvement initiative

The goal of the MDS PI CME initiative was to strengthen physician practices and improve the quality of MDS patient care. The activity was developed in collaboration with Aplastic Anemia & Myelodysplastic Syndromes International Foundation (AA&MDSIF) and designed for community hematologist/oncologists.

The activity was free of charge to participants. It followed the American Medical Association (AMA) PI CME model and included a three-stage process in which participants conducted retrospective patient chart reviews in Stage A, developed a personalized practice improvement plan in Stage B, and conducted a second set of retrospective chart reviews in Stage C.

Physician participants demonstrated significant gains in the diagnosis and classification of MDS and in the documentation of erythropoietin levels. Additionally, improvements related to patient communication and disease education were also observed. Results of the initiative support the overall efficacy and value of PI in MDS patient care.

Leukemia Research is an international journal that brings comprehensive and current information to all healthcare professionals involved in basic and (or) applied clinical research in leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, and other hematologic malignancies.
