BALTIMORE, MD—April 30, 2013—Med-IQ, an award-winning, ACCME-accredited provider of continuing medical education (CME), has partnered with the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) to provide complimentary CME/CE/CPE to clinicians who care for patients with type 2 diabetes.

Patient-Clinician Perspectives on Insulin Therapy and the Role of Insulin Pens in Type 2 Diabetes: Current Evidence and Frontline Discussions

Approximately 8.3% of the US population is living with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a major cause of heart disease and stroke and can lead to kidney failure, lower-limb amputations, and blindness in patients living with the disease. Recent findings provide compelling evidence that intensive treatment of this condition and its known risk factors can significantly decrease the development/progression of diabetes-related complications.

Achieving adequate glycemic control is one of the cornerstones of preventing diabetes-related complications and early death, and the participation of both clinicians and patients in the management of this progressive disease is essential for success. Evidence demonstrates the use of insulin pens for obtaining adequate glycemic control may provide tangible clinical benefits over the traditional vial and syringe method of administration, yet clinicians and patients are often reluctant to begin insulin therapy.

This comprehensive educational activity offers a unique view on initiating insulin and using insulin pens in the management of type 2 diabetes by incorporating frontline perspectives and key teaching points from nationally recognized diabetes experts, certified diabetes educators, and patients.

Participants of the activity will learn strategies for supporting the appropriate implementation of insulin pens into practice, fostering effective communication to help overcome psychological insulin resistance, and reinforcing patient and physician acceptance of this treatment modality.

"Educational interventions that focus on strengthening patient-provider collaboration and shared decision making play an essential role in empowering patients to manage their disease and are important tools to overcome clinical challenges and improve patient adherence to therapy and outcomes," said William A. Mencia, MD, CCMEP, Vice President of Education and Medical Affairs at Med-IQ. "Med-IQ is pleased to be collaborating with the AADE to provide this continuing education activity to clinicians who manage the approximately 26 million people living with diabetes in the US."
