Industry Recognizes Med-IQ With 2013 Award for Outstanding Educational Collaboration

Educational Resources

BALTIMORE, Md.—January 16, 2013—Med-IQ, America’s most respected continuing medical education (CME) company, is pleased to announce that it is recipient of the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions' distinguished 2013 Award for Outstanding Educational Collaboration.

The award-winning activity, Women Empowered: A Community-Based Initiative to Improve Breast Health in African Americans, was conducted with Sisters Network Baltimore Metropolitan, Affiliate of Sisters Network® Inc., the only national African American breast cancer survivorship organization in the United States (US).

Med-IQ and the Sisters Network Baltimore Metropolitan developed a community-based patient-education campaign to address disparities in healthcare delivery and provided education to underserved and uninsured women, as well as healthcare professionals, in Baltimore, MD. Supported by an educational grant from Sanofi-aventis U.S. Inc., the initiative was designed to increase awareness, encourage women to get regular mammograms, and address fears that affect timely screening, diagnosis, and treatment.

As a result of this activity, two of the women who sought mammograms after the community event, were diagnosed with breast cancer and were treated in a timely manner.

“It is through such collaborative efforts that we advance the quality and integrity of continuing education. I commend your collective contributions to this goal and your commitment and dedication to our profession,” said Donna Connelly, BA, Awards and Member Recognition Committee Chair, Alliance for CEHP.

The breast cancer mortality gap between African American and white women in the US has been steadily growing since the 1980s, an inequality that exists despite a higher incidence of breast cancer among white women. In Maryland, the breast cancer mortality rate for African American women is 33 per 100,000; this exceeds the rate observed for white women and all women state- and nationwide. This disparity is particularly evident in Baltimore, which has the second highest annual breast cancer mortality rate for African American women in Maryland.

“Med-IQ has made the reduction of healthcare disparities a priority in our educational strategy for the years ahead,” said Allison Gardner, PhD, Director, Educational Strategy and Content, Med-IQ. “Collaborating with patient advocacy groups like Sisters Network will allow us to begin bringing together healthcare provider education and patient education to effect change.”

Med-IQ will be recognized at the Alliance for CEHP’s Awards Ceremony on Thursday, January 31, 2013, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM.
