CME Certified Initiative Focuses on Improving the Management of Familial Hypercholesterolemia

BALTIMORE, Md.—January 8, 2013—Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a heritable disorder, which in its most severe form can lead to a first myocardial infarction (MI) or other serious cardiovascular event before the age of 50. Therefore, screening and timely identification of these patients is of critical importance.

Based on the latest clinical practice guidelines and emerging evidence regarding new strategies for the management of FH, Med-IQ, an ACCME-accredited provider of continuing medical education (CME), developed a certified CME online activity that focuses on the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of FH.

In this comprehensive online publication enhanced with audio commentary, expert faculty also review current evidence regarding disease pathophysiology and the translation of contemporary science into effective evaluation and management.

“Available data suggest substantial gaps in the use of conventional and low-cost methods of diagnosing FH,” said William A. Mencia, MD, CCMEP, Vice President of Education and Medical Affairs at Med-IQ. “Lifestyle modifications and available and emerging pharmacologic treatments have the ability to significantly alter the outcomes of this genetic defect, but application of these advancements requires appropriately educated clinicians. Correcting these practice gaps is an important public health priority, as it will help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) among patients with FH..”
