Baltimore, MD—February 14, 2012—Med-IQ, an award-winning, ACCME-accredited provider of continuing medical education (CME), is pleased to announce the continuation of its complimentary, certified performance improvement (PI) CME initiative in multiple sclerosis (MS).

Performance Improvement Strategies in Multiple Sclerosis: 2012-2013 Series is approved as part of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology's (ABPN) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program and meets the board's Performance in Practice (PIP) requirements. Participants can receive up to 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ while earning one unit towards ABPN's PIP MOC requirement. ABPN's MOC process requires neurologists with time-limited, 10-year certificates to complete three PIP units over their 10-year MOC cycle to remain board certified.

This three-stage initiative offers neurologists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who are involved in the care of patients with MS the opportunity to assess their practice methods against current evidence, expert consensus, and their peers’ practice in an effort to identify areas of improvement to enhance patient care.

The 2012-2013 series has been updated to incorporate the expanding knowledge base and expert recommendations on initiating, monitoring, and modifying disease-modifying therapies (DMTs), as well as assessing treatment response, identifying and managing suboptimal responders, and improving patient adherence to DMTs.

More than 675 neurologists and other healthcare professionals enrolled in Med-IQ's original 2010-2011 multiple sclerosis PI CME series. Based on a comprehensive practitioner needs analysis conducted as part of the original activity, the new series features a printable decision-support tool, offering clinicians an evidence- and expert consensus-based aid for selecting, monitoring, and switching DMTs. Additional educational activities include a complimentary CME publication and two Community of Practice audioconferences.

"Clinical research and progress in understanding the complex pathophysiology of MS have led to dramatic improvements in the recognition and management of this disease, including the development of several new immunomodulating agents," said Douglas R. Jeffery, MD, PhD, Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center at Advance Neurology at Cornerstone Healthcare in Advance, NC. "By participating in this comprehensive PI CME initiative, clinicians will have access to consensus statements, recent developments, and new insights that can help improve care and, ultimately, outcomes for patients with MS."
