Baltimore, MD—January 18, 2012—Med-IQ, America’s most respected continuing medical education (CME) company, is pleased to announce that it is partnering with L.A. Care Health Plan to offer a new incentive program for eligible board-certified internists and non-board certified physicians caring for adult members with diabetes. Eligible physicians who complete Performance Improvement Strategies in Diabetes Care by October 2012 will qualify for L.A. Care Health Plan’s "pay for performance" plan.

Primary care physicians play a central role in the management of patients with diabetes, providing care for approximately 90% to 95% of adults with type 2 diabetes. The challenge of keeping abreast of recent advances in diabetes care requires timely education and practical tools that can be implemented at the point of care.

"This partnership is an opportunity to align performance improvement (PI) education with incentives to help improve the management of patients with diabetes," said William A. Mencia, MD, CCMEP, Vice President of Education and Medical Affairs at Med-IQ.

Participants can earn up to 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ and use their data from Performance Improvement Strategies in Diabetes Care to earn American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) credit. This PI CME activity is approved through the ABIM Approved Quality Improvement (AQI) Pathway and is eligible for 20 points towards the Self-Evaluation of Practice Performance requirement of MOC.

Endorsed by The Endocrine Society, Performance Improvement Strategies in Diabetes Care is a three-stage, certified PI CME activity designed to help clinicians improve diabetes care in three areas of clinical focus:

  • Glycemic control
  • Prevention, detection, management of diabetes-related complications
  • Lifestyle modifications

What is PI CME?
PI CME has been recognized as an important component of a physician's continuing professional development and may answer multiple credentialing and reporting needs. Participation is simple, and enrollment is complimentary. Each stage can be completed online or with the help of the Med-IQ concierge team, which is available to explain the initiative and provide tips to make the process more convenient.

Physicians can participate conveniently while they practice.
    Stage A
Assess
Assess your current practice against evidence-based goals and standards by obtaining baseline data through the review of 25 of your diabetes patient charts. You will receive reports comparing your data with national standards and data submitted by your peers.
    Stage B
Apply
Develop and follow your own improvement plan. You will have access to useful educational resources, including three CME certified, electronic implementation guides. Each guide pertains to one of the three areas of clinical focus outlined above and provides a detailed discussion of clinical evidence, recommendations, and best practices. The guides also include case examples to help reinforce key strategies as well as physician- and patient-based forms and tools to help implement suggested recommendations.
    Stage C
Evaluate
Reassess your practice to measure the effects of your improvement plan by pulling data from 25 diabetes patients you have seen since implementing your improvement plan. You will receive reports comparing your data with national standards, your peers, and your Stage A baseline data.

This activity will take approximately 3 months to complete. Upon receiving verification of activity completion, L.A. Care will issue eligible participants $1,000 to recognize the time and effort required.
