BALTIMORE, Md.—November 7, 2011— Nearly 75 million Americans have two or more comorbid chronic conditions, such as arthritis, chronic respiratory conditions, diabetes, and heart disease, according to the United States (US) Department of Health and Human Services. Primary healthcare professionals need to be armed with up-to-date knowledge on evidence-based approaches to manage a variety of different diseases in their patients, as well as understand how the presence of multiple conditions affects overall patient management.

Med-IQ and Duke University School of Medicine are pleased to invite primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants to attend an interactive, complimentary, certified continuing medical education (CME) workshop series that addresses practical challenges faced in managing patients with multiple comorbidities.

Complex Cases in Primary Care: Managing Patients With Multiple Comorbidities is an innovative approach to CME, developed in collaboration with the American College of Physicians, Pennsylvania Chapter, Colorado Academy of Family Physicians, New York County Medical Society, and Orange County Medical Association.

“Practice barriers will be broken down by faculty and attendees, protocols of the past will be questioned, medical minds will be stimulated and challenged, and learners will even have fun,” said William A. Mencia, MD, CCMEP, Vice President of Education and Medical Affairs at Med-IQ.

Co-sponsored by the Duke University School of Medicine and Med-IQ, the first two workshops were held in October 2011 in Philadelphia and Anaheim, where more than 80 and 90 clinicians participated, respectively.

“The speakers were enthusiastic and kept the group involved,” said a nurse practitioner who participated in the Philadelphia workshop.

Complimentary registration is now open to primary care clinicians in the following cities:
  • Denver—November 12, Denver Marriott City Center
  • Dallas—November 19, Dallas/Addison Marriott Quorum by the Galleria
  • New York—December 3, Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers

“Join us for this engaging, certified workshop that will present participants with patient case exercises that incorporate several therapeutic areas and highlight gaps between standards of care and current performance,” said Kathryn Andolsek, MD, MPH, Professor of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center, and medical director for this activity.

The workshops incorporate both large and small group discussions, in which evidence-based guidelines and treatment algorithms are presented and applied by teams of learners. Throughout the activity, participants will receive feedback from national faculty and their peers on best practices and treatment approaches. To reinforce the learning after the live sessions, attendees and other primary care clinicians will be invited to participate in interactive, patient-centered online case studies. The case studies will highlight management challenges associated with a variety of different patients who have multiple comorbidities and address practice-related themes, including:

  • Improving adherence to medication and treatment recommendations
  • Engaging patients in self-care
  • Coordinating care across a multidisciplinary healthcare team
  • Managing lifestyle requirements and limitations of chronic diseases
