BALTIMORE, Md.—October 21, 2011— Multiple Sclerosis (MS), an immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system (CNS), affects up to 400,000 people in the United States (US), with a new case being diagnosed every hour. The ability to work, socialize, and perform daily activities can be severely affected because of the unpredictable nature of the disease, symptoms experienced during relapses, and disability related to the progressive nature of the disease.

“MS also imposes a considerable economic burden on individuals, their families, and the healthcare system; mean annual costs per patient are estimated at more than $47,000,” said William A. Mencia, MD, CCMEP, Vice President of Education and Medical Affairs at Med-IQ.

To help healthcare professionals improve the care of their patients with MS, neuroscience clinicians are invited to register to attend a complimentary, certified continuing medical education (CME/CE), interactive workshop series.

Strategies From the Frontline of Multiple Sclerosis Care will help clinicians discover the latest strategies for improving MS diagnosis, treatment, and patient follow-up. Participants will learn methods to enhance patient outcomes by:
  • Individualizing treatment decisions
  • Choosing appropriate pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies for the treatment of MS-related symptoms
  • Improving medication adherence and coordination of care

Neuroscience nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants are at the front line of MS patient care. These specialized clinicians, as well as general nurse practitioners who treat patients with MS, require a significant level of expertise to provide high-quality patient care. In addition, these clinicians must be able to coordinate multiple treating clinicians as well as educate patients and other healthcare professionals about patient needs within the context of MS.

“Although a cure for MS does not exist, effective symptom management can greatly enhance quality of life,” said Christina Caon, BSN, MSN, NP-C, faculty chair of the workshop series.

“Long-term success depends on the early detection of symptoms and the development of a comprehensive care plan. This can often be achieved with a combination of pharmacologic therapies, supportive services, and referral to specialists when necessary,” said Caon, Assistant Director of Clinical Research and Nurse Practitioner at the Multiple Sclerosis Center at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI.

Workshops have already been held in Chicago and Houston. Registration is currently open to neuroscience clinicians in the following cities:

  • Boston—October 29, Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel
  • Long Island—November 5, Long Island Marriott Hotel and Conference Center
  • Irvine—November 12, Hilton Irvine/Orange County Airport
  • San Francisco—November 19, Courtyard San Francisco Downtown
  • Birmingham, MI—December 3, The Townsend Hotel
  • Philadelphia—December 10, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown

Each workshop has been approved for a maximum of 2.0 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM, two hours of AAPA Category I CME credit, and 2.0 AANP and CBRN contact hours. Due to the popularity of this event and limited seating, all interested parties must register and be confirmed to attend.
