Baltimore, MD—September 27, 2011—Joint Commission Resources (JCR), the not-for-profit affiliate of The Joint Commission, and Med-IQ, an accredited provider of continuing medical education (CME), continue to collaborate to provide comprehensive, quality clinical educational initiatives for healthcare professionals nationwide. As part of this strategic partnership, Med-IQ and JCR are pleased to announce the launch of the complimentary CME/CE initiative, Emerging Treatment Options for the Prevention of Atrial Fibrillation–Related Stroke.

Stroke is a major risk factor for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The American College of Chest Physicians’ guidelines recommend the use of antithrombotics for the prevention of stroke in patients with AF, and The Joint Commission has focused on stroke prevention in their Disease Specific Care Performance Measures for Primary Stroke Centers. However, despite these efforts, stroke-prevention strategies are often overlooked in clinical practice, leading to the sub-therapeutic use of oral antithrombotics and leaving patients with AF at an even higher risk of experiencing this complication.

“It has been determined that clinicians are underusing risk-assessment tools that can aid in the prevention of this underlying complication of AF,” says Leslie LaBelle, RN, MSN, MBA, CPHQ, Associate Director of National Conferences and Field Education for Joint Commission Resources. “This educational series is designed to heighten clinicians’ awareness of and adherence to evidence-based guideline recommendations related to appropriate stroke prophylactic strategies for at-risk patients.”

Consisting of an interactive Webcast with built-in case discussions, as well as a print publication, this complimentary CME/CE series is designed for cardiologists, hospitalists, and other clinicians involved in the care of patients with AF.

Participants will explore:
  • Prevalent risk factors for stroke
  • The importance of aggressive, preventive management
  • The application of risk assessment tools to guide therapeutic decision making
  • Benefits and barriers related to the effective use of antithrombotic therapy
  • The potential role of emerging anticoagulant agents

This complimentary educational series can be accessed today at www.Med-IQ.com/s35. The certified CME/CE print publication will also be available as a supplement to the October issue of The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety.

This series is approved for AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM by Duke University School of Medicine and ACPE credit by Med-IQ and is supported by an educational grant from Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., administered by Janssen Scientific Affairs, LLC.
