Osteoporosis PI CME

Baltimore, MD—September 19, 2011—Med-IQ, an ACCME-accredited provider of continuing medical education (CME), is pleased to announce that its complimentary performance improvement (PI) CME activities in diabetes care and osteoporosis have been approved through the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Approved Quality Improvement (AQI) Pathway and are each eligible for 20 points towards the Self-Evaluation of Practice Performance requirement of Maintenance of Certification (MOC).

"By allowing physicians to apply quality measurement to their practice and use the resulting data to improve diabetes and osteoporosis care, Med-IQ's performance improvement initiatives effectively meet the Maintenance of Certification requirement in practice performance," said Elizabeth Blaylock, Vice President of PIM Development at the ABIM.

Primary care physicians play a central role in both the management of patients with diabetes (providing care for approximately 90% to 95% of adults with type 2 diabetes) and in the prevention of osteoporosis-related fractures (which now occur in more than 1.5 million patients in the United States annually). The challenge of keeping abreast of recent advances in diabetes care and osteoporosis prevention requires timely education and practical tools that can be implemented at the point of care.

Med-IQ's Performance Improvement Strategies in Diabetes Care (endorsed by The Endocrine Society and now in its fourth year) and Performance Improvement Strategies in Osteoporosis (in its second year) offer comprehensive collections of educational activities designed to cover a broad range of topics on these conditions, with the ultimate goal of helping primary healthcare professionals improve the care of their patients.

What is PI CME?
PI CME has been recognized as an important component of a physician's continuing professional development and may answer multiple credentialing and reporting needs. Med-IQ is a leader in providing AMA-standardized, certified PI CME initiatives and currently offers ABIM MOC-approved PI CME in diabetes and osteoporosis, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN)-approved PI CME in multiple sclerosis, and certified PI CME in collaboration with Duke University School of Medicine in venous thromboembolism (VTE).

Participation is simple, and enrollment is complimentary. Eligible healthcare professionals who complete the below stages in succession will earn 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Each stage can be completed online or with the help of the Med-IQ concierge team, which is available to explain the initiative and provide tips to make the process more convenient.

"We are pleased to offer internists and subspecialists the ability to earn vital MOC credit and 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ while evaluating and improving their clinical practice methods according to board-specific competencies within diabetes care and osteoporosis," said William A. Mencia, MD, Vice President of Education and Medical Affairs at Med-IQ.

PI CME Participation
  • 11,500 clinicians have enrolled to begin or are currently participating in Med-IQ's PI initiatives
  • Practicing clinicians have submitted data from more than 19,300 patient charts
  • More than 700 clinicians have developed implementation plans to improve their practice performance
  • More than 375 clinicians have completed Med-IQ's PI platforms
    • This number of PI completers is significant considering both the time commitment that is required of participants (an average of 5.5 months) and the individual effort (baseline and post-education chart audits across multiple validated performance measures)

High-Quality PI CME Made Easy
With healthcare professionals busier than ever and requirements for MOC Part IV becoming more complex, it is important for clinicians to select PI/QI activities that are effective and practical uses of their time. Med-IQ is dedicated to the ongoing enhancement of its PI systems and processes to support clinicians and enable them to participate in PI CME while they practice. Participation is simple, and enrollment is complimentary.

Med-IQ's concierge team is available to assist participants at any time by answering questions and providing step-by-step instructions, tips, and reminders, as well as data entering to prevent interruptions to patient care. All information clinicians provide is confidential and no patient-identifying information is collected. Med-IQ's concierge team has assisted more than 11,000 PI CME participants.

Med-IQ's diabetes and osteoporosis PI CME activities have been established to capture outcomes data up to Moore Level 5 (performance). These initiatives are sponsored by Med-IQ, approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ and supported by educational grants from Lilly USA, LLC.
