Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake
BALTIMORE, MD—September 1, 2011—Did you know that more African American women in Baltimore die from breast cancer than in most other cities in the entire state of Maryland?

Sisters Network® Inc., the only national African American breast cancer survivorship organization in the United States, and Med-IQ, an award-winning accredited provider of continuing medical education, are pleased to announce the next Gift for Life Block Walk® to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention and reduce disparities of care in Baltimore.

Saturday, September 10, 2011
9 AM–2 PM ET
Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church
2812 Reisterstown Road
Baltimore, MD 21215

Saturday morning, breast cancer survivors and volunteers will canvas door-to-door to distribute breast health information and giveaways. The community will be invited to the neighborhood church for a "lunch and learn" and health fair with local exhibitors.

Guest speakers will include Dawn Johnson Leonard, MD, Medical Director of the Herman & Walter Samuelson Breast Care Center at Lifebridge Health and the Alvin Lois Lapidus Cancer Institute at Northwest Hospital, and Maimah Karmo, President of Tigerlily Foundation and recipient of the Congressional Black Caucus Leadership in Advocacy Award for her work with young women and breast cancer.

"Sisters Network is committed to increasing local and national attention to the devastating impact that breast cancer has in the African American community. We are proud to partner with Med-IQ to help support and reinforce our live community canvassing and educational sessions in Baltimore," said Dawn Fitzpatrick, President, Baltimore affiliate chapter, Sisters Network Inc.

How can you help?

Med-IQ is partnering with Sisters Network Baltimore, Affiliate of Sisters Network Inc., a leading voice in the survivorship community, to provide this community-based patient education campaign addressing disparities in healthcare delivery to underserved and uninsured women, as well as healthcare professionals, in Baltimore. Supported by an educational grant from sanofi-aventis U.S., the initiative is designed to increase awareness, encourage women to get regular mammograms, and address fears that affect timely screening, diagnosis, and treatment.

Help us empower women in Baltimore to take control of their health and stop breast cancer.
