BALTIMORE, MD—December 15, 2010—Med-IQ, an award-winning, ACCME-accredited provider of continuing medical education (CME), is pleased to announce that it has successfully launched and implemented more than 10 American Medical Association (AMA)-standardized, certified performance improvement (PI) CME activities since 2008, providing clinicians with platforms to implement practice improvements in a wide range of therapeutic and clinical areas.

PI CME Leadership

Med-IQ is a leader in providing AMA-standardized PI CME initiatives; current offerings include:

Colorectal cancer
Diabetes
Lung cancer
Multiple sclerosis
Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS)
Osteoporosis
Prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism (VTE)

• in medically ill patients
• in oncology patients
• in patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery

PI CME has been recognized as an important component of continuing professional development, and may answer multiple credentialing and reporting needs. Many of the medical specialty boards, including the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), require physician participation in lifelong learning, ongoing assessment, and improvement of physician practice performance and patient outcomes.

Board Approved

Med-IQ's PI CME initiative in Diabetes has been approved by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) for Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Part IV Credit through the Approved Quality Improvement Pathway (AQI) program.

“Med-IQ's performance improvement initiative in diabetes care meets the requirements of our AQI pathway and supports the goal of our MOC program—to promote lifelong learning and the enhancement of clinical judgment and skills essential for high-quality patient care,” said Elizabeth Blaylock, Vice President of PIM Development at the ABIM.

The educational design and measurement protocols, as well as preliminary data for the diabetes initiative, have been published in the peer-reviewed journal, CE Measure. An initial report and an interim data analysis of Med-IQ's PI CME activity in acute coronary syndromes (ACS) were also published in the peer-reviewed specialty journal, Critical Pathways in Cardiology. A third article has been submitted for consideration for publication.

Med-IQ's Multiple Sclerosis PI CME initiative is approved by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) MOC program.

“The goal of the ABPN MOC program is to advance the clinical practice of psychiatry and neurology by promoting the highest evidence-based guidelines and standards to foster practice improvement and ensure excellence in all areas of care,” said Patti Vondrak, Director of Examination Administration and MOC for the ABPN. “Med-IQ's complimentary CME activity, Performance Improvement Strategies in Multiple Sclerosis, meets the standards for the new PIP requirement for certification as it supports this commitment to lifelong learning.”

Med-IQ's PI CME initiative in Diabetes Care has been completed by 158 clinicians and is now recognized as a vanguard in diabetes education for primary care to improve the comprehensive care of patients with type 2 diabetes. The successes are evident in the participation and improvements in knowledge, competence, and practice performance across the spectrum of basic diabetes care, improving glycemic control, and preventing complications of disease.

“Despite fundamental changes in the CME industry, these data indicate that clinicians are adapting to PI CME. It works, and we believe it demonstrates the value of continuing professional development and the commitment of physicians to improve the quality of the care that they provide to their patients,” said William A. Mencia, MD, Vice President of Education and Medical Affairs for Med-IQ.

PI CME Participation

11,440 clinicians have enrolled to begin or are currently participating in Med-IQ's PI initiatives
• Practicing clinicians have submitted data from 19,341 patient charts
681 clinicians have developed implementation plans to improve their practice performance
• More than 361 clinicians have completed Med-IQ's PI platforms

• This number of PI completers is significant considering the commitment that is required of participants in time (an average of 5.5 months) and effort (baseline and post-education chart audits across multiple validated performance measures)

Med-IQ is dedicated to the ongoing improvement of the PI process to support participants, including greater interaction through its Concierge service, more intuitive data collection processes, accessible and learner-friendly educational resources and valuable practice tools, the ability to use data from select PI CME activities to earn points toward ABIM MOC, and the rewards/recognition provided through the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA), and similar managed care plans, to physicians enrolled in MOC and completing PIMs on a regular basis.

Med-IQ sponsors its PI CME in collaboration with leading organizations to provide the highest level of education. Designed in response to data and outcomes analysis from its certified CME/CE activities, Med-IQ PI CME recognizes that clinicians need comprehensive, extensive, ongoing education about practical strategies to improve the care of patients with a variety of conditions and disease states.
