BALTIMORE, MD—November 22, 2010—Med-IQ, an award-winning, ACCME-accredited provider of continuing medical education (CME), and series chair Mikkael A. Sekeres, MD, MS, of Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute, are pleased to invite hematology/oncology clinicians to participate in a complimentary, certified performance improvement (PI) CME initiative in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS).

“I invite you to join me and Dr. Guillermo Garcia-Manero, of MD Anderson Cancer Center, in this first-of-its-kind, complimentary PI CME initiative to advance MDS patient care,” said series chair, Mikkael A. Sekeres, MD, MS, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director, Leukemia Program, at Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute, Department of Hematologic Oncology and Blood Disorders.

MDS represents a heterogeneous group of bone marrow disorders that primarily affect older patients. According to estimates, more than 10,000 new MDS cases are diagnosed each year, and this number is expected to rise substantially as the US population ages.

Provided in collaboration with the Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation (AA&MDSIF), Performance Improvement Strategies in MDS is a certified, three-stage educational initiative in which participants self-assess their current MDS practice performance, develop a plan for sustained improvement in patient care, and reevaluate their practice changes based on their previous performance and peer-based standards of care. Participation is simple, and enrollment is complimentary.

“We have designed this initiative to help improve the care of patients with MDS,” said Dr. Sekeres. “It emphasizes guideline- and evidence-based patient evaluation and disease classification, surveillance and supportive care, and treatment.”

Eligible healthcare professionals who complete the PI CME initiative will earn 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ and can use their data to complete the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Self-Directed Practice Improvement Module (PIM) to earn credit for ABIM Maintenance of Certification (MOC). The initiative can be completed online or with the help of the Med-IQ concierge team, which can provide tips to make the process more convenient.

Performance Improvement Strategies in MDS is approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ and is supported by an educational grant from Celgene Corporation. To learn more, visit www.pi-iq.com/mds.
