BALTIMORE, Md.—October 21, 2010—Joint Commission Resources, Inc. (JCR), the not-for-profit affiliate of The Joint Commission, and Med-IQ, America’s most respected continuing medical education (CME) company, today announced the availability of a new clinical education series in their strategic partnership.

Joint Commission Special Report: Improving Surgical and Inpatient Outcomes in VTE is a certified CME/CE series designed to help hospital-based clinicians translate current evidence into strategies that can improve outcomes for patients with, or at risk of developing, venous thromboembolism (VTE).

“Despite the well-recognized risks of VTE and the proven benefits of preventing it, appropriate VTE prophylaxis strategies remain underutilized in hospitalized patients due to a number of barriers, and urgent action is needed to improve these processes,” said William A. Mencia, MD, Vice President of Education & Medical Affairs at Med-IQ.

This multi-platform educational series features five satellite television broadcasts to hospital-based clinicians in the United States on the Joint Commission Resources Quality & Safety Network (JCRQSN), an interactive Webcast, and a publication. The content reviews evidence-based data, clinical guidelines, and national performance measures released by The Joint Commission, the National Quality Forum, and the Surgical Care Improvement Project. In addition, the series includes practical suggestions for overcoming common barriers in the hospital setting that may impede the optimal prevention and management of VTE.

“Because many factors can influence prophylaxis decisions, healthcare professionals must be aware of these performance measures, able to identify patients at risk of VTE, and up-to-date on guideline recommendations and evidence to design appropriate VTE prophylaxis strategies,” said George Riccio, distance learning associate director for Joint Commission Resources.

JCR and Med-IQ began collaborating in 2009 to deliver innovative medical education to hospital-based physicians and other healthcare professionals. JCR delivers these special clinical presentations through the JCRQSN in a series of satellite and online broadcasts designed to educate hospital-based healthcare professionals on applying Joint Commission standards and continuously improving patient care.

This JCR/Med-IQ series is approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ and is supported by an educational grant from sanofi-aventis U.S. To learn more, visit www.Med-IQ.com/S23.
