BALTIMORE, MD—October 12, 2010—Med-IQ, an ACCME-accredited provider of continuing medical education (CME), is pleased to announce that its complimentary performance improvement (PI) CME initiative, Performance Improvement Strategies in Multiple Sclerosis, has been approved as part of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology’s (ABPN) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program and meets the board’s new Performance in Practice (PIP) requirements.

Performance Improvement Strategies in Multiple Sclerosis is an American Medical Association (AMA)-standardized, certified, three-stage initiative in which participants self-assess their current multiple sclerosis (MS) practice performance, develop and implement an individual plan for sustained improvement in patient care, and reevaluate their practice changes based on their previous performance, current evidence, and peer-based standards of care.

To date, more than 260 neurologists and other healthcare professionals have enrolled in this complimentary PI CME initiative to improve their practice performance and enhance the care of their patients with relapsing forms of MS. Participants can earn one unit toward the new PIP MOC requirement, in addition to 20 AMA PRA Category I Credits™ for completing the series.

“As a company that is committed to delivering superior continuing education that will improve clinicians’ medical knowledge, performance, and, ultimately, patient health, it is essential that we remain cutting edge to be able to provide our customers with what they really need,” said William A. Mencia, MD, Vice President of Education and Medical Affairs at Med-IQ. “We are delighted to be in this unique position where our MS PI CME activity meets the performance in practice requirements for the ABPN’s new maintenance of certification standards, offering clinicians the ability to earn vital certification credit while also affording them the opportunity to evaluate their clinical practice in order to improve their performance and optimize patient care.”

ABPN’s PIP MOC Requirements

In an effort to improve clinical practice and enhance patient care, the ABPN is implementing new certification requirements. Part of the updated, comprehensive recertification process requires neurologists with time-limited, 10-year certificates to complete a PIP component.

PIP is a two-part quality improvement program designed for clinically active physicians. The new component requires diplomates of the ABPN to participate in practice improvement activities through chart review and second-party external review. Diplomates must complete three PIP units over their 10-year MOC cycle to remain board-certified.

“The goal of the ABPN MOC program is to advance the clinical practice of psychiatry and neurology by promoting the highest evidence-based guidelines and standards to foster practice improvement and ensure excellence in all areas of care,” said Patti Vondrak, Director of Examination Administration and MOC for the ABPN. “Med-IQ’s complimentary CME activity, Performance Improvement Strategies in Multiple Sclerosis, meets the standards for the new PIP requirement for certification as it supports this commitment to lifelong learning.”

The ABPN is recommending that neurologists recertifying in 2013 begin participating in appropriate activities now to meet deadlines, as the new PIP requirement could take up to 2 years to complete.
