Target Audience
This activity is intended for cardiologists.
 
Statement of Need
Approximately 5% to 10% of all patients with hypertension have secondary hypertension, defined as increased systemic blood pressure due to an identifiable cause. Patients with an early onset of high blood pressure or blood pressure that is particularly challenging to control should be screened for potential secondary causes because early detection and treatment are important to prevent irreversible changes in the vasculature. Clinicians need to be aware of clinical characteristics suggestive of secondary hypertension in order to identify and manage the cause.
