BALTIMORE, MD—May 20, 2015—According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF), advancements in cystic fibrosis (CF) research and care have doubled life expectancy in the last 30 years for this patient population. In an effort to raise awareness of the disease and share their story of hope and progress, the CFF has declared May to be national CF Awareness Month. Med-IQ is currently engaged in three educational initiatives designed to improve CF patient care and in recognition of CF Awareness Month, Med-IQ invites pulmonologists and other clinicians who manage patients with CF to participate in the recent launch of their online publication, Use It, Lose It, or Something in Between? Expert Perspectives on the Utility of Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing in Cystic Fibrosis Treatment Planning.

This CME-certified activity explores the role of antibiotic susceptibility testing in treatment planning for patients with an acute exacerbation who need intravenous (IV) antibiotic therapy. Pulmonologists and other house staff may be inclined to tailor therapy based on the results of these tests; however, clinical evidence repeatedly demonstrates that regimens based on susceptibility results do not influence clinical outcomes in CF. The online publication addresses this disconnect and discusses other factors that should be considered when selecting an IV antibiotic regimen to treat exacerbations.

“Pulmonary exacerbations present inevitable challenges for physicians who care for patients with CF,” said Patrick A. Flume, MD, Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. “Because treatment approaches for exacerbations are often guided more by art and experience than clinical evidence, my colleagues and I discussed practical strategies for selecting therapies that limit short- and long-term detrimental effects of acute exacerbations. The publication incorporates key points and audio clips from our discussion.”
