Complimentary CME/CE Publication Addresses Suicide Risk in Active-Duty Military and Veteran Populations

MS Masters Interactive Workshop Series: Contemporary Strategies in the Management of Multiple Sclerosis

BALTIMORE, MD—December 1, 2014—With an estimated 22 suicides committed each day by United States (US) military veterans, the issue of suicide within the military is of critical concern. In an effort to help the federal healthcare system deal with the unprecedented challenge of long-term healthcare needs, Med-IQ, an award-winning provider of continuing medical education (CME), developed a publication focused on the awareness and identification of patients in the federal healthcare system who have an increased risk of suicide.

Suicide in Military Personnel: Risk, Awareness, and Resources in the Federal Healthcare Settings is a complimentary publication available online and distributed as a supplement to U.S. Medicine: The Voice of Federal Medicine that provides clinicians with an update on the assessment and management of suicide risk among active-duty military and veteran populations. The CME/CE-certified publication examines trends in suicide rates, discusses warning signs and factors associated with an increased rate of suicide, reviews current guideline recommendations for the assessment and management of suicide risk, and highlights suicide prevention resources available with the Veterans Health Administration and Department of Defense.

“Although a vast number of suicide prevention programs exist to aid military servicemembers, veterans, and their families, knowledge about the availability and specialty of each is reported to be minimal, even among those they are intended to benefit," says William Mencia, MD, CCMEP, Vice President, Education and Medical Affairs at Med-IQ . “Vigilance in identifying soldiers and veterans at risk of suicide, and taking action by reporting concerns, is an important action we can take in lowering suicide rates.”
